Es el testimonio que el escritor francés André Gide –premio Nobel 1957– ensaya en esta pequeña obra editada por Lumen y titulada estrictamente Oscar Wilde. Arte y espíritu, placer y dolor se encadenan con eslabones finos en este libro. Consta de dos ensayos y una cronología, pero no es un estudio histórico, sino espiritual. Con el recuerdo de breves conversaciones y encuentros más o menos distantes en la vida de Wilde, André Gide nos regala una visión distinta del dandy que osciló entre la fama y el escándalo en los últimos días del siglo diecinueve. Gide es preciso y profundo para entregarnos, con pocas escenas, un perfil sincero del alma poética del escritor inglés y de los abismos que tocó al descender de la cima del placer más cultivado hacia la deshonra, el sufrimiento, el abandono. Esta obra no es una biografía, sino un retrato –quizá una serie diapositiva– que juega con los negativos de Óscar Wilde para exponer a la luz el rostro interno de uno que no quiso ser artista, sino arte.
